31 Days to Bless Your Home: Easy Tips for the Domestically Challenged

Week 1- The Sensual Home: Learning to Appeal to All Five Senses to Create Beauty in Your Home

Day 4 – The Comfort of Home and Romancing the Bedroom

“She makes coverings for her bed;
she is clothed in fine linen and purple.” Proverbs 31:22 NIV
This week’s challenge: Choose one new idea from each of the five senses to enhance the atmosphere of your home.
Today’s challenge: Decide today to start a new habit of making your bed daily. (Think of the sense of touch and use soft sheets, fluffy comforters and pillows, and anything that makes your bed feel luxurious and comfortable.)
Today’s challenge seems so simplistic; I know.  However, when you consider that your bed consumes about 2/3 of the visual space in your bedroom, that one simple tip will set you on course to transforming the atmosphere of your home.  Developing the habit of making your bed every day will make the most important room in your house look and feel more inviting, neat, comfortable, and put together.
While I am emphasizing the bedroom today, I included “The Comfort of Home” as part of the title because some of the tips I will include to make your bedroom more comfortable and romantic can also be used throughout your home to make it a more comforting haven.
We have been talking about using all five senses to create atmosphere in your home, and if you haven’t figured it out yet, today’s focus is the sense of touch.  Think of textures, temperature, and fluff.  Make everyone in your home experience luxurious comfort in every room of the house.  Use downy throws and blankets, squishy pillows, soft rugs, textured curtains, fluffy comforters, cushiony furniture, etc.  Experiment with a variety of textures and weights of fabric to add subtle hints of comfort throughout your home.
While I am on the topic of touch, I cannot discount the value of hugs, massages, holding hands, caresses, or any other soothing touches of love.  A home that is full of affection is a home full of love.
More specifically, let us make our bedrooms especially comfortable and romantic havens.  Here are some simple tips:

  • The bedroom is for sleep, relaxation, and love only.  No work!  Remove anything in your room that robs you from good rest or romance, such as clutter, bills (yuck!), computers, laundry, anything pertaining to work, pictures of in-laws or children (major romance killers!), etc.
  • Your bedroom is worth the investment of the time, money, and work to make it a haven for you and your husband, if you are married.  It is also well worth it even if it is just for you.
  • Invest in a wonderful bed.  Choose one that you will love to crawl into at the end of a hard day.  Make sure it is one that does not cause back pain or robs you of comfortable sleep.
  • Invest in beautiful and very comfortable sheets.  Only the best will do!  In the fall and winter, we use fleece sheets, and they are out-of-this-world comfortable!  I thought they would make me miserable with hot flashes, but not at all!  They feel so good!
  • Use down comforters, or whatever bedding is most comfortable for you.  We have a feather bed under our sheets and a down comforter on top.  So fluffy!
  • Make sure the comforter or bedspread is as appealing to your husband as it is you.  Nothing too feminine!  It should be mutually enjoyed!
  • Keep it cool.  Most people sleep better in a cool room and hunkered down under the covers.  This one might be a hard one for you both to agree on, but in our home, my husband and I both love it cold in our bedroom!  Then, we can keep each other warm!
  • Add romantic touches, such as fresh flowers, plants, candles, and romantic pictures.
  • Make sure you have a lock!  Privacy is a must!
  • Think twice about having a TV in your room.  TV can rob you of romance in a second!  It takes the attention off of each other.  However, if you choose to have one, limit the time spent watching.  Put love first!
  • It is not a bad idea to have a source of music in your room.  We play music from my husband’s phone – ha ha!  However, we have several favorite play lists that really set the tone.
  • Since I am moving beyond the sense of touch, let’s keep going here:  Consider romantic colors of paint, curtains, and bedding.  You can find so many ideas to put it all together in a romantic theme by browsing Pinterest, magazines, and Better Homes and Gardens online.  Have fun working on your haven together, and see that bond draw you even closer!
  • Why not have some games in your room for fun for just the two of you?
  • Go to bed together every time you can. Don’t get in the habit of neglecting your mate. Don’t get stuck in a lonely habit.  Make love your top priority!
  • I recommend the book Red-Hot Monogamy, by Bill and Pam Farrel, pp. 39-48, for ideas to create exotic and very romantic bedroom settings.  They have ideas most of us have never considered, such as an African Plain, jungle, mountaintop, Cozy and Quaint, Eden Experience, Simply Sexy, Historic Hottie, Little Bit of Heaven, Lover of the World, and Walk on the Wild Side.  Don’t these sound exciting?  Have some fun and try something daring!
  • Read the sexiest book ever written together, Song of Solomon.

Have fun making your home the most comfortable haven possible for yourself and your family, and enjoy your newly made over romantic bedroom.  I hope this has been your favorite day so far!
Come back tomorrow for the sense of taste. I will include my favorite fall recipes for you to enjoy over the weekend.
Thank you, and God bless you and your home!
